We offer optimized solutions for energy storage systems to on-grid and off-grid installations. Focus of those systems is somewhat different, but the basics are the same. Premise is that there is energy production system (usually PV solar panels) and means to store energy for later use. There the basic building blocks end and customization begins.

On-Grid Energy Storage Systems

This is increasingly hot topic in Finland and Europe in general. Reason is variability in energy prices due to increasing share of variable energy sources especially wind power. Home Energy Storage System (ESS) offers several benefits for the end users to manage risks related to energy prices. It also gives benefits for Electricity Distributor (DSO) for reducing peak power. Highlights of the benefits can be summarized like this:

  • Ability to use produced energy when it is needed
  • Allows to store over production of solar energy for own use rather than sell with low cost
  • Allows trading energy offering flexibility to the energy grid
  • Minimize the total energy cost of the house
  • Possibility to earn money by participating reserve energy markets

Basic requirements for On-Grid ESS are Grid tied inverter and energy storage batteries. These two components alone allow to shield the user against high energy peak prices. It also allows user to participate to energy markets either via direct energy production or via reserve markets.

Recommended setup involves:

  • solar panel array
  • solar inverter or solar battery charger
  • grid-tied inverter system for three phase electricity
  • suffciently large battery bank to store energy for at least one day consumption of the house

This setup allows full commercial and functional advantage of ESS to be utilized.

Off-Grid Energy Storage Systems

Off-grid energy storage offers different set of challenges but in general is simpler system than On-Grid ESS. Since there is no grid there is no requirement for grid tie inverter. Inverter usually is installed unless all systems run on DC power. Also installation can be easily complicated with diesel aggregator etc. Main challenge is managing energy storage so that there is enough energy for projected daily consumption. Especially if there isn’t backup power source. On Off-Grid installation battery capacity is recommended to be clearly bigger than with On-Grid installation.
